Audi’s digital rear-view mirror, which made its debut in the R18 e-tron Quattro and R18 ultra race cars at this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours, is set to enter small scale production at the end of this year in the Audi R8 e-tron. Unlike previous rear-view mirrors from the likes of Ford, Toyota and Mazda, which dedicate only a percentage of the mirror’s surface area to displaying vision from a rear-view camera, Audi’s digital rear-view mirror does away with the conventional mirror altogether.

Audi’s digital rear-view mirror, which made its debut in the R18 e-tron Quattro and R18 ultra race cars at this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours, is set to enter small scale production at the end of this year in the Audi R8 e-tron. Unlike previous rear-view mirrors from the likes of Ford, Toyota and Mazda, which dedicate only a percentage of the mirror’s surface area to displaying vision from a rear-view camera, Audi’s digital rear-view mirror does away with the conventional mirror altogether.The “mirror” consists of a 7.7-inch AMOLED display from Samsung that displays digital images captured from a small camera mounted on the rear of the car. The camera is positioned in an aerodynamically optimized housing that is heated in cold weather to ensure the lens doesn’t fog up. This lens, which has a diameter of just a few millimeters, covers a larger field of vision than is provided by a conventional rear-view mirror.Audi says the AMOLED display produces a high contrast image with an intelligent control system used to cut the dazzle from headlights in following vehicles. Drivers can also dim the display or turn it off all together if they wish – although you’d have to question whether this is wise, or even legal in some parts of the world. Audi is also planning to display additional information on the digital rear-view mirror in the future.The technology’s first appearance in a production vehicle will be in the R8 e-tron, which is entering production at the end of this year. Based on the first e-tron concept car shown in Frankfurt in 2009, the R8 e-tron is an obvious choice for the introduction of the digital rear-view mirror as it has no rear window.

AUDI A1 e-Tron For the German Olympic Team

Audi has given the German Olympic team an A1 e-tron for the London Olympics.
As partner of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) and the National Paralympic Committee Germany (DBS) Audi presented the Olympic squad with an Audi A1 e-tron in the German colors.
It is an electric car with a range extender. The A1 e-tron reaches a maximum speed of 130 km/h thanks to its power of 75 kW (102 hp). If the battery power is exhausted a compact combustion engine, the range extender, recharges the battery as required and in doing so increases the range to up to 250 kilometers.
The A1 is used as an exhibition car and reinforces the shuttle service between the German House and the MS Deutschland cruise ship, which Audi equips with a total of 60 vehicles. The Ingolstadt based automobile manufacturer recently extended its partnership with the DOSB and DBS to the end of 2016.

The world-renowned artist and film-maker Chris Cunningham is to premiere his latest work, jaqapparatus 1, at Audi City, the new digital showroom on London’s Piccadilly.
Chris Cunningham is famed for his video and film collaborations with Aphex Twin and Björk, and has had his work displayed in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Venice Biennale, the Barbican, the Royal Opera House, and the Royal Festival Hall.
jaqapparatus 1 will be unveiled at the VIP launch of Audi City on 16 July.
We will be giving out tickets to the public for performances on July 19th and 20th.

RM Auctions Monterey 2012Just weeks after an Audi R10 TDI went under the hammer at the Artcurial auction during the 2012 Le Mans Classic event, another Audi sports prototype will be on auction as well. The 2001 Audi R8 LMP chassis #501 will be sold by RM Auctions. The car is scheduled to appear at the 2012 Monterey Auction from 17 – 18 August.

Audi R8 chassis #501 is currently owned by George Stauffer who also owns the 2001 Bentley EXP Speed 8 chassis #002/3 which finished third at Le Mans 2001. It is worth noting that the 2001 specification Bentley EXP Speed 8 race cars used the same Audi 3.6 V8 Biturbo as used by the 2001 Audi R8 LMP cars. This Bentley will also be going under the hammer at the Monterey Auction alongside Audi R8 #501.
