2013 BMW HP4 S1000RR | BMW and its BMW Motorrad division is introducing the first four-cylinder motorcycle, the BMW HP4, for model year 2012. A technical and engineering progression that started with the very first HP model back in 2005, the HP4 harnesses the same water-cooled four-cylinder in-line engine found on the BMW S 1000 RR. Able to generate 193 horsepower, BMW added “Rain”, “Sport”, “Race” and “Slick” modes for an even power distribution despite the ride conditions. Race ABS, along with Dynamic Traction Control, both optimized for two wheels, there is even a Launch Control function like those on high-end performance cars. Already the lightest among four-cylinder superbikes at just 199 kilos, more weight can be taken off with its Competition Package of carbon fiber elements and special alloy accessories. The BMW HP4 will be arriving at the BMW showroom near you shortly. SOURCE

Launch control typically refers to an electronic aid which is used to assist the drivers of various motorsports at the start of a race.Launch control also refers to an electronic setting on many modern sports cars which help the driver accelerate from a standing start, to gain the most effective “launch”. Popular automobiles with launch control include the BMW M series, certain marques of the Volkswagen Group with Direct-Shift Gearbox (most notably the Bugatti Veyron), Porsche 911, Panamera Turbo, and certain General Motors products. Mitsubishi also incorporated launch control into their Twin Clutch SST gearbox, on its “S-Sport” mode, but the mode is only available in the Evolution X MR and MR Touring (USDM). The Nissan GT-R has electronics to control launch but the company does not use the term “launch control” since some owners have equated the term with turning off the stability control to launch the car, which may void the warranty of the drivetrain.

How does AEB works ?

AEB Autonomous Emergency Braking System : We are familiar with ESP, ABS and other technology just because the recent cars launched in India were equipped with such technology. The futuristic AEB stands for Autonomous Emergency Braking System is no longer dream but it is being developed by VW, Mercedes Benz, BMW, Infiniti and many others.

AEB Autonomous Emergency Braking System

How does AEB Autonomous Emergency Braking System works ?
In simple words, AEB is the perfect blend of adoptive cruise control and full automatic control over braking to avoid frontal collisions whether driver wants it or not. It is safety system for cars which employs common types of proximity sensors, camera employing image recognition, LIDAR(that’s like RADAR but with light) and RADAR.It uses sensors or radars installed on the front of the vehicle ,some at the top of the wind shield to monitor the road obstacles coming on way ahead. In fact, that includes speed and distance to the vehicle in front, a control unit detects the risk of an impact. This system doesn’t look farther than 6 to 8 meters. That’s why they work up to 30 to 40 km/h. The driver is informed about the risk of an accident and he is required to push the brakes. In the mean time however,AEB pre-charges the brakes thus allowing the car to react properly whenever driver reacts. In case, the driver fails to react. AEB is there for you.It can apply the brakes with fullpower, bringing the vehicle to a stop in order to either avoid an accident or at least reduce damage. So driver can calmly drive putting trust on AEB. He can have a bite of burger and sip of coca-cola in hands. Of course, if the driver changes the direction or pushes brakes, AEB turns itself and simply continues its duty of monitoring the traffic signal ahead. It dies a better job than an experienced driver.

The bike had its first outing at the fairgrounds in West Liberty, Iowa running in an AMA race. It looks like BMW is going to get into competition wherever it can and I have little doubt they’ll be a contender. As I mentioned before, Ron Wood flat track motorcycles combine simplicity and function into a beautiful bike. Now, if they would just make them street legal.
