Prince Charles’s 1955 Imperial Midget Racer

1955 Imperial Midget Racer

Forget any notion that the Royals don’t know how to have fun; no stuffy family would consider giving a present such as this for a seventh Birthday, even if Charles was a Prince. Despite its tiny dimensions this Midget is powered by a two-stroke motorcycle engine and could reach speeds of 40mph, and was used by generations of Royal children until it was finally taken out of their hands and retired.

Unlike the old wagons, or even the current ones for that matter, the CLS Shooting Brake takes some of the four-door coupe design elements and translates them for wagon use. It might seem like an odd concept at first, but perhaps it’s genius. Wagons have long provided practicality, but that hasn’t exactly helped them fly out the door now has it? So, instead of pushing cargo space, Mercedes will be pushing style and that seems to work well in the automotive market place; just look at those terrible creations from BMW called the X6 and the recently announced X1.

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake

The CLS Shooting Brake arrives eight years after the original CLS was dropped into the market and it borrows most of its elements from the sedan brother, except for its incredible 590 liter trunk capacity. The model will be offered with a choice of four engines – two diesel engines and two petrol engine – with the top version being the CLS 500 powered by a 408 HP V8 engine. How about that for a shooting brake?

The new CLS Shooting Brake measures 4,956 mm in length, 1,881 mm in width, and 1,413 mm in height, and offers a trunk capacity of 590 liter that can be expanded up to 1550 liters when the rear seats are folded down. Despite these incredible dimensions, the new CLS is a very light car thanks to its intelligent lightweight construction: the doors are made from deep-drawn aluminum panels with extruded sections, and so are the tailgate, bonnet, front wings, various support profiles, and substantial parts of the suspension and engines.

Next to being the first luxury shooting brake, the new model is also the first passenger car in the world to offer optional dynamic full LED High Performance headlamps, which combine the exciting color elements of LED technology.

For the interior, the new CLS Shooting Brake offers a choice of five colors, five trim designs, and three qualities of leather. There are also three types of wood to choose from: high-gloss brown burr walnut, high-gloss black ash, and satin-finish light-brown poplar.

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS Engine

Mercedes is offering its clients a choice of four engines: two diesel engines and two petrol engines. The base version is the CLS 250 CDI. It is powered by an inline four-cylinder engine that delivers a total of 204 HP and a peak torque of 368 lb-ft. This version has a fuel economy of 5.3 liter per 100 km, sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds, and can hit a top speed of 146 mph.

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS

Next in the line-up is the CLS 350 CDI, offered in both standard and 4MATIC versions. This version is powered by a 3.0 liter V6 engine that delivers a total of 265 HP and a peak torque of 457 lbs-ft. It sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds and up to a top speed of 155 mph, with a fuel consumption of 6.0 liter per 100 kilometers (6.6 for the 4Matic version).

Then we have the CLS 350, a model that gets a 3.5 liter V6 with 306 HP and a peak torque of 272 lb-ft. The 350 will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds and up to 155 mph, but unlike the 350 CDI, it has a fuel consumption of 7.3 liters per 100 kilometers.

Finally, our favorite is the CLS 500, also offered in standard and 4MATIC versions. It gets a 4.7 liter V8 biturbo engine that delivers an amazing 408 HP and 442 lb-ft of torque. This version will go from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds, but unfortunately top speed is still limited to 155 mph. Fuel consumption for this version is 9.8 liters.

All engines will be offered with the 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission and ECO start/stop function, while the 4MATIC versions will also get all-wheel drive systems.

The new CLS Shooting Brake will go on sale at the end of the year. Prices will be announced at a later date.

WHAT IS THE GOODWOOD FESTIVAL OF SPEED ?

This annual festival brings together the very best in automotive design and technology – parading hi-tech Formula One cars alongside vintage vehicles, state of the art supercars alongside steam-powered engines.

GOODWOOD FESTIVAL OF SPEED

The festival’s roots stretch all the way back to 1936, when the then Earl of March invited the Lancia Car Club to attempt a hillclimb challenge in the grounds of Goodwood House.

That event inspired the Earl’s grandson – the present Earl of March – to hold an annual celebration. And so it was in 1993, the first Goodwood Festival of Speed took place.

That year, 25,000 visitors, mainly from the UK, turned up at Goodwood House to enjoy a relatively modest inaugural festival.

Since then, the event has grown massively: combining thousands of cars and motorcycle displays, the idiosyncratic hillclimb challenge, World Rally Championship races, competitions, live music and even air displays from the Red Arrows.

Entry is now capped at 150,000, and all tickets must be bought in advance.

The four-day event starts on June 28 this year, with the Moving Motor Show – kicking off with the famous hillclimb and annual Bonham’s auction.

During the day, specially-invited guests will be able to get behind the wheel of the new Peugeot 208 for the first time – as well as experiencing the diesel HDi 163bhp front engine and 37bhp rear electric motor of the 508 RXH.

The rest of the weekend is then turned over to the Festival of Speed, with new model displays from car manufacturers alongside historic post and pre-war vehicles, illustrating the journey of automotive evolution right through from steam to hybrid.

Goodwood doesn’t just attract car enthusiasts. Many motoring professionals are seen at the event too – Formula One stars Lewis Hamilton and Jensen Button are just two expected to appear in 2012.

Where is Goodwood?

The 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed takes place from June 28 to July 1 at Goodwood House, Chichester, West Sussex, PO18 0PX.

Peugeot is a very proud sponsor of the 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Naturally, we’ll have a world-class stand at the festival this year – showcasing two exciting new Peugeot concept cars, alongside our range of industry-leading green cars and diesel hybrids.

This year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed is themed around “Young Guns – Born to Win” – a fitting headline for the rebirth of one of our most legendary vehicles.

Visitors to Goodwood can experience the first UK showing of the brand new 208 GTi Concept – a modern take on a Peugeot icon, the 205 GTi. The 208 GTi Concept is a smaller, lighter vehicle than its predecessor, the Peugeot 207, and has more space internally.

The new Peugeot 208 GTi Concept car features lower bodywork spoilers, lower sill skirt extensions, double chrome exhaust pipes, a brushed aluminium GTi Concept logo, and a crisp chequered flag motif on the metal mesh grille.

As well as unveiling the striking new 208, we’ll be showcasing a futuristic concept capable of changing size to seat between four and six people. This powerful diesel hybrid, the Peugeot HX1 concept car, will be displayed for the first time to UK fans.

This car is simply stunning:  beautiful and sleek in design, yet practical and passenger-orientated, it is able to undergo a metamorphosis to seat four, five or even six people, with four half-scissor doors, aerodynamic contours and an adjustable steering wheel for a truly luxurious driving experience.

Peugeot is driven by the emotion of motoring – nothing embodies the UK’s love of automotive design more than the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

We’re not just showcasing our latest car models, either. Visitors to the Peugeot stand can enjoy breath-taking dance routines from the Let Your Body Drive dancers, inspired by US Internet dance sensation, Marquese Scott. A recent video featuring the Peugeot 208 and Marquese’s body-popping moves has already gained more than two-million views on YouTube.

Peugeot will also participate in the traditional Hill Climb event, with demonstrations featuring the Pikes Peak Peugeot 405 T16, and the Team Peugeot RCZ Nokia race car, the Nürburgring 24 Hours class-winner in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Michelin Pit Stop Challenge : Goodwood Festival of Speed weekend

One of the highlights of the Goodwood Festival of Speed weekend, which kicks off today, has got to be the Michelin Pit Stop Challenge.

Michelin tyres provide entertainment for motoring enthusiasts at the Goodwood Festival of Speed

Michelin Pit Stop Challenge.  at the Goodwood Festival of Speed

The tyres company has organised a stand with a replica racing car, fully tooled up and ready for everyone to have a go at changing the wheels.

Hosted by motoring journalist and broadcaster Victoria Macmillan Bell, the Challenge will pit teams against one another in a race to change the wheels on the car – prizes will be given for the best times of the day.

According to Victoria: “Tutored by a team of Michelin experts, the Pit Stop Challenge is open to everyone, and I’d encourage anybody to have a go and see how difficult it is to change a wheel in anything like a respectable time.

“The race is on and I’ll see you there!”

The Pit Stop Challenge is just one of the great events being organised for the three-day motoring bonanza.

For motor racing fans in particular, four times Formula One World Champion Alain Prost will be appearing this year, joining a host of drivers whose careers are closely associated with Michelin.

Prost, whose outstanding time in Formula 1 resulted in four titles, 51 victories, 33 pole positions and 106 podium finishes between 1980 and 1993, grew up racing on Michelin tyres.

Porsche 918 Spyder ~ World Debut

The 20th Goodwood Festival of Speed has gone under way today and the talk of town is the Porsche 918 Spyder. This super sports car was first unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Show where it received an overwhelming response from car enthusiasts and Porsche fans around the world and was then given the go-ahead for production. Here’s the best bit though. The Porsche 918 Spyder ‘s V8 3.0-litre hybrid petrol engine produces over 500hp and yet retains a mileage of almost 40kmpl.

Porsche 918 Spyder ~ World Debut

The Spyder’s design has been taken from Carrera GT, Porsche 917 and RS Spyder. However the post-production unit will not feature the open top presented at the concept show. It will instead come with a manual roof panel that can be removed and deposited into the luggage compartment. The Spyder comes with a 7-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) and two motors, one at the front and the other at the rear axle that adds a joint mechanical output of 218 hp.

 Porsche 918 Spyder Overview

The production version of the Porsche 918 Spyder isn’t scheduled to be unveiled until the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, but the company recently let Wired test drive a prototype at the Nardo Test Track.

The Porsche 918 Spyder Prototype

One of only three models in existence, the prototype uses a 4.6-liter V8 engine sourced from an ALMS LMP2 RS Spyder. It produces 570 hp (425 kW / 578 PS) and is backed up by two electric motors: a 121 hp (90 kW / 122 PS) unit in the seven-speed transmission and a 107 hp (80 kW / 109 PS) motor that powers the front axle. This setup gives the supercar a combined maximum output of 770 hp (574 kW / 710 PS) and 553 lb-ft (749 Nm) of torque – 700 lb-ft (948 Nm) with overboost. Thanks to this impressive output, the prototype can run from 0-60 mph in less than three seconds and hit a top speed of 202 mph (325 km/h).

Since the sports car is also a hybrid, it features a 6.8 kWh battery which enables the model to travel approximately 16 miles (26 km) on electricity alone. When the battery is depleted it can be recharged in roughly six hours with a 110V outlet or two hours with a rapid charger.

While the figures could change by the time the car is revealed in production guise, the vehicle is slated to use a carbon fiber and aluminum chassis that weighs just 485 pounds (220 kg). This will help the model to have an overall curb weight of approximately 3,700 pounds (1,678 kg).

Aston Martin has announced that the Aston Martin DB9 1M will make its official debut in the next few days, but the first image was published on their Facebook account. We don’t expect to see this model built in large numbers nor do we expect the winner to receive this as a gift.

We’ll keep you posted on any details that arrive on the Aston Martin DB9 1M when it is officially unveiled at Goodwood.
