“Valkyrie” Porsche  Electric Motorcycle Concept

Inspired by Porsche’s iconic 911 sportscar, the “Valkyrie” Electric Motorcycle concept merges signature themes from the Porsche classic with a sleek, futuristic design that paves the way for a new generation of zero-emission motorcycles. The small array of electric bikes currently on the market have set an excellent benchmark for environmental standards, yet fail to satisfy the avid motorcyclist’s passion for beauty and performance.

“Valkyrie” Porsche  Electric Motorcycle Concept

The elimination of the combustion engine means the body of the motorcycle is much lighter and leaner, providing an elegant profile with dynamic grille underneath the bike that improves both air flow and ventilation for the electric motor. A streamlined titanium-aluminum alloy monocoque body structurally supports the lightweight bike, while also concealing the proprietary motor adapted from the latest Porsche hybrid technology, the array of batteries and the electrical wiring infrastructure. The bike will also be wired with digital sensors that provide dynamic feedback to a central processor that automatically adjusts suspension and other settings according to riding conditions, as well as a digital heads-up display on the windshield which reduces clutter from the dashboard.

“Valkyrie” Porsche  Electric Motorcycle Concept

Our design seeks to capitalize on Porsche’s ability to manufacture inspirational performance supercars, as embodied not only in their 911 series but also the new fuel-efficient 918 Spyder. Adapting the hybrid technology of the Spyder to an electric ‘superbike’, this motorcycle concept seeks to reinvigorate the electric motorcycle market with an exhilarating vehicle that inspires the same awe and excitement as a new Porsche sportscar.

2012 Lotus Evora 414E Hybrid

Lotus has announced that its Evora 414E Range Extender Hybrid Electric Vehicle (or REEV for short) has begun testing at its headquarters at former RAF base Hethel in Norfolk, UK. Labeled a “technology demonstrator,” the 414E delivers two and a half times the torque of the supercharged Evora S.

2012 Lotus Evora 414E Hybrid

“The Evora S has 400 Nm of torque which in such a lightweight car is already a healthy figure,” said Simon Corbett, Lotus Engineering’s Principal Vehicle Dynamics Test and Development Engineer. “But the Evora 414E has two and a half times that amount. The acceleration sensation is almost indescribable, the surge of torque is like an ocean wave.”

2012 Lotus Evora 414E Hybrid

The 414E’s 1000 Nm of torque is delivered by two electric motors, one each of the rear wheels. This figure, which appears in a Lotus press release, appears to be an increase over the previously quoted torque of 400 Nm per motor, a figure which is still live on the Lotus website.

2012 Lotus Evora 414E Hybrid

The motors’ output also seems to have increased from 306 to 309 kW (or from 410 to 414 hp) combined. Lotus has now given a top speed for the hybrid: 209 km/h (130 mph).

2012 Lotus Evora 414E Hybrid

There appears to be a subtle change, too, in the quoted battery-only mileage which the press release puts at 48 km (30 miles) down from the 56 km (35 miles) still quoted on the website. Using an Xtrac 1092 transmission, the 414E produces a claimed 55 g of carbon dioxide per km when its three cylinder ranger extender engine (which runs on either gasoline, methanol or ethanol) is required. We assume that figure is based on the engine burning gasoline.

Otherwise, the performance and specs appear to have remained unchanged from those we reported when the

The drive system of the Audi R8 e-tron Electric Supercar that Markus Winkelhock drove to the world record corresponds in every detail with that of the production model that will come on the market at the end of the year. Both of the car’s electric motors generate an output of 230 kW and 820 Nm of torque; more than 4,900 Nm (3,614.05 lb-ft) are distributed to the rear wheels nearly from a standing start.

The Audi R8 e-tron Electric Supercar’s rechargeable lithium-ion battery stores 49 KWh of energy — enough for a distance of about 215 kilometers (133.59 miles). Its “T” shape allows it to be installed in the center tunnel and in the area between the passenger compartment and the rear axle. It is charged by energy recovery during coasting and braking. The ultralight car body of the Audi R8 e-tron Electric Supercar is made primarily of aluminum, along with CFRP components; this is a main reason why the high-performance sports car weighs just 1,780 kilograms (3,924.23 lb), despite the large battery

Porsche 918 Spyder ~ World Debut

The 20th Goodwood Festival of Speed has gone under way today and the talk of town is the Porsche 918 Spyder. This super sports car was first unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Show where it received an overwhelming response from car enthusiasts and Porsche fans around the world and was then given the go-ahead for production. Here’s the best bit though. The Porsche 918 Spyder ‘s V8 3.0-litre hybrid petrol engine produces over 500hp and yet retains a mileage of almost 40kmpl.

Porsche 918 Spyder ~ World Debut

The Spyder’s design has been taken from Carrera GT, Porsche 917 and RS Spyder. However the post-production unit will not feature the open top presented at the concept show. It will instead come with a manual roof panel that can be removed and deposited into the luggage compartment. The Spyder comes with a 7-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) and two motors, one at the front and the other at the rear axle that adds a joint mechanical output of 218 hp.

 Porsche 918 Spyder Overview

The production version of the Porsche 918 Spyder isn’t scheduled to be unveiled until the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, but the company recently let Wired test drive a prototype at the Nardo Test Track.

The Porsche 918 Spyder Prototype

One of only three models in existence, the prototype uses a 4.6-liter V8 engine sourced from an ALMS LMP2 RS Spyder. It produces 570 hp (425 kW / 578 PS) and is backed up by two electric motors: a 121 hp (90 kW / 122 PS) unit in the seven-speed transmission and a 107 hp (80 kW / 109 PS) motor that powers the front axle. This setup gives the supercar a combined maximum output of 770 hp (574 kW / 710 PS) and 553 lb-ft (749 Nm) of torque – 700 lb-ft (948 Nm) with overboost. Thanks to this impressive output, the prototype can run from 0-60 mph in less than three seconds and hit a top speed of 202 mph (325 km/h).

Since the sports car is also a hybrid, it features a 6.8 kWh battery which enables the model to travel approximately 16 miles (26 km) on electricity alone. When the battery is depleted it can be recharged in roughly six hours with a 110V outlet or two hours with a rapid charger.

Electric Supercharger

Making Gasoline Engines as Efficient as Diesel

The most common type of hybrid car uses electricity stored in batteries to power an electric motor. But what if instead of going to a motor, that electricity was used to power an electric supercharger? That’s exactly what UK firm Controlled Power Technologies (CPT) is doing, and the results are promising. Tests on various engine types have shown that a gasoline engine equipped with this tech can compete with a diesel, and torque has been increased by 40-50% and CO2 emissions have been reduced by around 20%.

2012 VOLVO V60 PLUG-IN HYBRID ( Video )- Sponsored Review

There are many hybrids on the market, but none of them can match the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid.
The world’s first diesel plug-in hybrid is Volvo Car Corporation’s most technically advanced model ever – an electric car, hybrid car and muscle-car all rolled into one. At the mere touch of a button you can choose which of your three cars you want to drive at any given moment in time.

2012 VOLVO V60 PLUG-IN HYBRID

The production version of the V60 Plug-in Hybrid will be launched in just one colour – Electric Silver. Sales get under way at the start of 2012, and the first cars will be built in the autumn of that year.

“Our plug-in hybrid has received considerable attention since it was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2011. Now we’re taking the next step by presenting the production model, which is graced with a distinctive profile featuring a spectacular silver colour, an exclusive interior and generous standard equipment,” says Stefan Jacoby, President and CEO of Volvo Car Corporation.
The first 1,000 units of the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid are only available in Electric Silver livery. The car is also distinguished by aero-designed 17-inch wheels, integrated exhaust tailpipes and a number of bodywork features in glossy black, such as the grille and the aerodynamic front spoiler.
The chromed “Plug-in Hybrid” emblem is found both on the lower part of the tailgate and in a smaller version on the front wings.

Standard is also the High Performance Multimedia DVD audio system with its 4×40 W amplifier, eight loudspeakers and seven-inch screen.

Smartphone app
The V60 Plug-in Hybrid is the first Volvo to be launched with an entirely digital Driver Information Monitor (DIM). The conventional analogue gauges have been replaced by a one-piece LED screen offering a large number of display options. The driver can choose which information to show via the car’s menu setup.
It is also possible to communicate with the car via a mobile app. This gives the owner access to a number of smart functions such as air conditioning, pre-cooling and after-cooling, and a reminder to connect the charge cable if this has not been done by a predetermined time.

On the car’s tailgate there is a D6 badge. The reason is that the combined performance of the five-cylinder turbodiesel and electric motor puts the car firmly within the same horsepower range as the petrol powered T6.
The front wheels of the V60 Plug-in Hybrid are powered by a five-cylinder 2.4-litre turbodiesel producing 215 hp and maximum torque is 440 Nm. The car has a six-speed automatic transmission.
The rear axle is powered by an electric motor producing 70 horsepower. The electric motor is supplied with power from an 11.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack installed under the floor of the load compartment.
The sophisticated and exceptionally compact battery pack consists of 10 modules each containing 20 cells. An integrated computer monitors the system and compares temperature and charge level in each of the 200 cells. The battery pack also has an integrated water-cooling system driven by the car’s climate unit.

Three driving modes – three cars in one

2012 VOLVO V60 PLUG-IN HYBRID

The driver selects the required driving mode via three buttons that give the car three entirely different temperaments: Pure, Hybrid or Power.

In Pure mode the car is powered solely by its electric motor as much as possible. If the battery pack has been recharged with electricity from renewable sources, its range is up to 50 kilometres and its carbon dioxide emissions are zero. The electric range varies with terrain, climate and driving style.
Hybridis the standard setting whenever the car is started. The diesel engine and electric motor cooperate to ensure optimal balance between driving pleasure and environmental footprint. CO2 emission (NEDC, mixed driving cycle for certification) is 49g/km, corresponding to diesel consumption of 1.9l/100km. The car has a total range of up to 1,000km.
In Power mode the technology is optimised to give the car the maximum possible power. The diesel engine and electric motor have a total power output of 215+70 horsepower and maximum torque of 440+200Nm. The electric motor’s lightning-quick torque delivery contributes to the car’s acceleration from 0 to 100km/h in 6.2 seconds.
Save battery power for later
The driver can choose to save battery power in order to drive on pure electricity later on, for instance in an urban green zone or in the heart of a city.
When Save is activated, the on-board system ensures that there is always sufficient charge for driving later in Pure mode. If necessary, the high-tension generator will charge the battery pack so there is sufficient capacity for driving in Pure mode.
The aim is that the Save mode should ensure there is sufficient battery power for about 20 kilometres of driving on electricity alone.

Charge at home – cooling or heating in advance
The V60 Plug-in Hybrid can be recharged from a regular power outlet (230V/6A, 10A or 16A) at home or in a parking lot. Recharging time varies with amperage. A full charge with 10A takes 4.5 hours. This is cut to 3.5 hours with 16A, while a 6A charge takes 7.5 hours.
It is also possible while recharging the car to heat or cool the passenger compartment to provide a more comfortable start of your journey. This also means that more battery power is used for actually propelling the car.
The pre-conditioning function can also cool the batteries. The ideal operating temperature for the battery pack is 20-30°C. This means that cooling prior to driving is very important in order to maximise battery charge and thus also range.
The V60 Plug-in Hybrid has two heating systems. In electric mode the car uses a PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) air heater. The car also has a diesel-powered heater.

Better pulling power with four-wheel drive (AWD)
Pressing the AWD button activates the electrical four-wheel drive. Instead of the mechanical power transfer of conventional four-wheel drive, the central control unit distributes power between the diesel-driven front wheels and the electrically-driven rear axle. The electric four-wheel drive system has been designed to provide better grip when starting and when driving on slippery roads, for instance in snow or mud.
However, owing to the electric motor’s lower power, torque to the rear wheels is limited and four-wheel drive is active up to 120 km/h.
When four-wheel drive is activated, the diesel engine operates continuously and the generator ensures that the charge level in the battery pack is sufficient to supply the rear axle with the necessary power.
Since electric four-wheel drive is only activated by the driver when necessary, it is more economical than conventional permanent four-wheel drive.

2012 VOLVO V60 PLUG-IN HYBRID

2012 VOLVO V60 PLUG-IN HYBRID

Two-stage braking system
A two-stage braking system is yet another smart feature of the Volvo Plug-in Hybrid. When the driver presses the brake pedal, the system starts braking the rear axle’s electric motor. This braking energy is then used to recharge the car’s battery pack.
The mechanical brakes are activated only when the situation requires more braking power than the rear axle can provide.
