How does AEB works ?

AEB Autonomous Emergency Braking System : We are familiar with ESP, ABS and other technology just because the recent cars launched in India were equipped with such technology. The futuristic AEB stands for Autonomous Emergency Braking System is no longer dream but it is being developed by VW, Mercedes Benz, BMW, Infiniti and many others.

AEB Autonomous Emergency Braking System

How does AEB Autonomous Emergency Braking System works ?
In simple words, AEB is the perfect blend of adoptive cruise control and full automatic control over braking to avoid frontal collisions whether driver wants it or not. It is safety system for cars which employs common types of proximity sensors, camera employing image recognition, LIDAR(that’s like RADAR but with light) and RADAR.It uses sensors or radars installed on the front of the vehicle ,some at the top of the wind shield to monitor the road obstacles coming on way ahead. In fact, that includes speed and distance to the vehicle in front, a control unit detects the risk of an impact. This system doesn’t look farther than 6 to 8 meters. That’s why they work up to 30 to 40 km/h. The driver is informed about the risk of an accident and he is required to push the brakes. In the mean time however,AEB pre-charges the brakes thus allowing the car to react properly whenever driver reacts. In case, the driver fails to react. AEB is there for you.It can apply the brakes with fullpower, bringing the vehicle to a stop in order to either avoid an accident or at least reduce damage. So driver can calmly drive putting trust on AEB. He can have a bite of burger and sip of coca-cola in hands. Of course, if the driver changes the direction or pushes brakes, AEB turns itself and simply continues its duty of monitoring the traffic signal ahead. It dies a better job than an experienced driver.

Historic drive of Bertha Benz Photos

The Benz Patent-Motorwagen Nr. 3 of 1888, used by Bertha Benz for the first long distance journey by automobile (more than 106 km or sixty miles)

Bertha Benz, married to Karl, chose to publicize the Patent-Motorwagen in a unique manner: She took the Patent-Motorwagen No. 3, supposedly without her husband’s knowledge, and drove it on the first long-distance automobile road trip to demonstrate its feasibility as a means to travel long distances. That trip occurred in early August 1888, as the entrepreneurial lady took her sons Eugen and Richard, fifteen and fourteen years old, respectively, on a ride from Mannheim through Heidelberg, and Wiesloch (where she took on ligroin as a fuel at the city pharmacy, making it the first filling station in history), to her maternal hometown of Pforzheim. As well as being the driver, Benz acted as mechanic on the drive, cleaning the carburetor with her hat pin and using a garter to insulate a wire. She refueled at the local pharmacy in Wiesloch and as the brakes wore down, Benz asked a local shoemaker to nail leather on the brake blocks, in doing so, inventing brake lining on the way. After sending a telegram to her husband of the arrival in Pforzheim, she spent the night at her mother’s house and returned home three days later. The trip covered 194 km (121 mi) in total. In Germany, a parade of antique automobiles celebrates this historic trip of Bertha Benz every two years. In 2008, the Bertha Benz Memorial Route was officially approved as a route of industrial heritage of mankind, because it follows Bertha Benz’s tracks of the world’s first long-distance journey by automobile in 1888. Now everybody can follow the 194 km (121 mi) of signposted route from Mannheim via Heidelberg to Pforzheim (Black Forest) and back.

Origin Of The name "Mercedes"

Mercedes-Benz is a multinational division of the German manufacturer Daimler AG, and the brand is used for automobiles, buses, coaches, and trucks. Mercedes-Benz is headquartered in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The name first appeared in 1926 under Daimler-Benz but traces its origins to Daimler’s 1901 Mercedes and to Karl Benz’s 1886 Benz Patent Motorwagen, widely regarded as the first automobile.

Origin of the name “Mercedes”
Emil Jellinek was a wealthy Austrian businessman and Austro-Hungarian diplomat living in Nice on the French Riviera. His daughter Adriana Manuela Ramona Jellinek, 10 years old at the car’s construction, was given the pet name “Mercédès”. Jellinek used to name his possessions after her, such as his mansions, the automobiles he sold, his racing car team, etc.. He himself was often known as Monsieur Mercedes. As an avid fan of the DMG brand, Jellinek had signed up two DMG-Phoenix cars for competing in the Nice-La Turbie race on 30 March 1900, introducing the Mercedes name for both his racing team and its cars. A tragedy ensued when Wilhelm Bauer, the chief mechanic of DMG, raced one of the cars and was killed after the first curve of the race. Consequently, DMG canceled all further involvement in motorsport.Nonetheless, Jellinek persuaded DMG to design a new model for competing again. He insisted that the powerful engine should be developed by both Maybach and Paul Daimler and be named Daimler-Mercedes, after his daughter. This wish was granted because the Daimler brand of the DMG had been already conceded to the French Panhard carmaker for all France.

Mercedes-Benz AMG : 45 Years Of Excellence

AMG Celebrates 45th anniversary
Around the world, the three letters AMG, embody automotive high performance, exclusivity and dynamic driving excitement. This month, the company founded in 1967 by Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher is celebrating its 45th anniversary.

The image of AMG as the performance brand of Mercedes-Benz is reflected in its impressive successes in the world of motorsport and its unique approach to creating high-performance vehicles. Today it is a one hundred percent subsidiary of Daimler AG and is the group’s technological spearhead in the high-performance segment. The AMG brand promise of “Driving Performance” stands for state-of-the-art technology and pure driving excitement.

Milestone 1967: Company founded by Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher
1990: Cooperation agreement concluded between what was then Daimler-Benz AG and AMG
1993: C 36 AMG was the first jointly developed vehicle
1999: Gradual integration into the Daimler group began and completed in 2005
2009: The SLS AMG is the first vehicle developed independently by Mercedes-AMG

Driving performance for the new generation

AMG recently revealed plans to launch the new A 45 AMG in Europe and other markets (not available in the U.S.) beginning in 2013. The new A45 AMG – the top-of-the-range Mercedes-Benz A-Class model, will address a new target group that is younger than the traditional AMG customer. Professionally successful and independent, these customers are looking for a smaller, dynamic and expressive vehicle matched with high performance capability. The AMG 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine specially developed for the A 45 AMG is expected to set new standards in its displacement class: with maximum torque significantly above 400 Nm (295 lb-ft.) and low consumption levels, AMG is aiming to take the leading position among the competition. “Our goal is to build the most dynamic, most powerful and at the same time most efficient four-cylinder series production compact car. Together with other future high-performance compact cars, the new A 45 AMG will embody exclusive dynamism and the “AMG Performance 50″ growth strategy. With this passionate commitment to what for us is a new vehicle segment, Mercedes-AMG plans to make a significant contribution to the growth of Mercedes-Benz Cars”, according to Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

SLS AMG as the first independently developed vehicle

As the first vehicle developed independently by Mercedes-AMG, the SLS AMG super sports car unveiled in 2009 proves to impressive effect the competence and passion which exists at the headquarters in Affalterbach.

For MY2013 in the U.S., Mercedes-Benz will offer the new SLS AMG GT. Available as a Coupe or Roadster, the new SLS GT will go on sale in mid-November 2012.

The specific assembly area for the SLS AMG is located in the largest Mercedes-Benz production plant in Sindelfingen. The AMG 6.3-liter V8 engine comes direct from the AMG engine workshop in Affalterbach, where is it hand-assembled according to the traditional “one man, one engine” philosophy.

Consistent growth strategy

Mercedes-AMG has witnessed extremely dynamic growth and is enjoying strong demand for its vehicles, particularly in the United States, one of its three largest markets. The global growth is continuing in 2012. In the first quarter of the year, AMG recorded growth of more than 30 percent, marking it the best first quarter in the company’s history. As a result, AMG will continue its consistent growth beyond 2012 and make significant contributions to the sales achieved by Mercedes-Benz Cars. Based on a future growth strategy entitled, “AMG Performance 50,” in the coming years, AMG will add several new models to its broad high-performance portfolio. According to Ola Kallenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, “We have decided to expand our model range from its current level of 22 vehicles to around 30 vehicles in the future. We are looking to increase our global sales which today stand around 20,000 vehicles, to more than 30,000 vehicles by the time our 50th anniversary, and thereby assert our leading position in this exclusive segment.”

In addition to the new performance compact car, the SLS AMG GT and the GL 63 AMG, in the future the S-Class segment will play an even greater role at AMG. The current offering comprising the S 63 AMG and S 65 AMG, as well as the CL 63 AMG and CL 65 AMG, will be extended further over the coming years.

To meet the increasing demand, AMG is also expanding its production capacity accordingly. As a result, the new AMG 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine will be produced at the Mercedes-Benz MDC Power engine production plant in Kölleda (Germany?). Of course the 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engines will also be produced in line with the traditional AMG philosophy of “one man, one engine”. A characteristic feature of this production principle is the AMG engine badge bearing the signature of its engine builder.

Even more future AMG models with all-wheel drive

All-wheel drive is set to play a bigger role at Mercedes-AMG in the future too – being offered not just for SUVs and off-road vehicles, but also for other AMG high-performance vehicles. Mercedes-AMG currently has four all-wheel-drive models in its range: the ML 63 AMG, the G 63 AMG, the G 65 AMG and the GL 63 AMG. To mark the start of the new era, in 2013 the new A 45 AMG (not available in the U.S.) will feature a performance-oriented all-wheel drive system as standard.

AMG Lightweight Performance design strategy

A further building block adopted from the world of motorsports is the area of lightweight construction – less weight means better performance and lower fuel consumption. As part of the lightweight construction strategy known as “AMG Lightweight Performance,” Mercedes-AMG will continue to apply consistent measures to reduce vehicle weight. Through their experience with the SLR, the AMG Black Series and in motorsports, Mercedes-Benz and AMG have accumulated more than 10 years of expertise in working with carbon fiber. The SLS AMG incorporates a carbon fiber driveshaft, and the SLS AMG Roadster draught-stop is composed of a carbon fiber sandwich structure. The 2013 SL 63 AMG and SL 65 AMG feature an internal support for the trunk lid produced from lightweight carbon fiber composite.

17 AMG for MY2013 ranging from 415 hp to 621 hp

As AMG celebrates its 45th anniversary, the model range is now not only larger and more diverse than ever before, and tailored to exceed the unique wishes and requirements of passionate AMG customers. In the U.S., the MY2013 range will include 17 AMG high-performance vehicles with power outputs ranging from 415hp to 621 hp. The selection of models available includes coupes, sedans, SUVs , roadsters as well as the SLS GT AMG super sports car. Each AMG model is an all around performance vehicle featuring a perfect combination of a powerful engine sound, excellent handling and an emotional driving experience. An exceptional highlight of the premiered vehicle was the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine in the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake “Edition 1”, which had been assembled by Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg during their visit to Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach on 18 July 2012. In doing so they changed the traditional AMG philosophy of “one man, one engine” slightly to “one team, one engine”, as they helped to assemble the highly efficient eight-cylinder M 157 engine, which produces 410 kW (557 hp).
The Formula One stars received expert help with installing the eight cylinders from AMG master engine builder Jens Zeitke. In addition to the signature of the master engine builder, the high-performance V8 engine also bears the signatures of Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg on the AMG engine badge.
Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg were especially pleased that their hard work was serving a particularly good cause: the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake “Edition 1” is to be auctioned off as part of the TV fundraising gala “A Heart for Children”, which is to be held on 15 December 2012.
Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “The CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake is establishing a completely new vehicle segment and is expected to delight new customers just as much as existing AMG enthusiasts. The exciting combination of performance, style and usability is unique. The special feature of our vehicle which has been premiered this evening is the fact that Nico and Michael fitted the cylinders in the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine during their visit to AMG in Affalterbach – in line with the slightly modified philosophy of “one team, one engine”. With their help we are very pleased to be supporting such a good cause.”
Norbert Haug, Vice President, Mercedes-Benz Motorsport: “The CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake has every quality needed to become a star. The Night of the Stars offers a great, sporty environment in which to give this unique car its world premiere.”

Mika Häkkinen: “Sporty cars have many attractions. But as a father, you soon learn to appreciate the practical side of a vehicle too. For me, the new CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake combines both of these strengths perfectly.”
David Coulthard: “With maximum power of 410 kW (557 hp), the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake “Edition 1″ delivers everything you could ever want in a road car.”
111 years of Mercedes motorsport
There was also another special reason to celebrate at the “Night of the Stars” – 111 years of Mercedes motorsport since the first Mercedes victory at the “Nice Speed Week” in 1901. In this anniversary year, Nico Rosberg achieved the first Silver Arrow victory of the modern era at his 111th Formula 1 start in China on 15 April 2012. At the same time this also marked the 111th Mercedes Grand Prix victory since Mercedes-Benz became involved in motorsport activities.

CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake – performance, style and usability

Mercedes-AMG is once again demonstrating its qualities as a visionary by establishing a completely new market segment with the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake. The new AMG high-performance vehicle is the exciting enhancement of an innovative vehicle concept. As an attractive alternative for design-oriented car enthusiasts, the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake combines performance with style and usability in a new way. Synonymous with the dynamism which is typical of AMG are features such as the highly efficient AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine with a power output of 386 kW (525 hp), the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission and the AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension. The generous interior and luggage compartment with a volume of up to 1550 litres reveal the practical sides of the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake. In addition to attractive optional extras from the AMG Performance Studio to enhance the driving dynamics even further, another unique highlight is the designo wooden luggage compartment floor. And as a truly exceptional offering there is also the limited CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake “Edition 1” boasting some particularly exclusive appointment features and an engine output of 410 kW (557 hp)..

The market launch of the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake and the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake “Edition 1” will commence in October 2012. The following is an overview of pricing for Germany (incl. 19% VAT):
CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake: €117,512.50
