1919 Evans Power-Cycle 119cc

The 119cc Evans Power-Cycle (CycleMotor Corporation, USA) was manufactured by the CycleMotor Corporation between 1919 and 1924, both as a complete machine and as a separate cycle-attachment engine. Various Evans motorcycles were exported to Europe.

After CycleMotor ceased production around 1924, manufacture passed to Stock-Motorpflug A.G in Berlin, who made them until 1933 under license and sold them under the name ‘Stock.’ Tax records from Berlin show Stock was only in business from 1924 – 1933. Later models had a 3hp engine with shaft drive.
This fabulous old motorcycle is not only rare in Great Britain, but very rare in the United States too.

As you can see from the brochure reproduced above, the Cyclemotor Corporation supplied this engine and petrol tank as a kit to fit to your own bicycle. Motorcycles were still very basic at this time, and cycle-attachments such as this were popular options.
The Evans was marketed in Great Britain too. By the mid-twenties, however, motorcycle design had improved and prices had been greatly reduced for lightweight motorcycles; even small cars were now sold for under £100. As their production costs were high, cyclemotor manufacturers could not compete, and the era of cyclemotors and cycle-attachments came to an end (just as it did in 1955 with the introduction of the first mopeds).

1897 The Humber Electric Tandem Bike

This tandem électrique was an invention of the Frenchmen de Clerc et Pingault. On Mai 22 1897 this tandem rode 1 km in 57 4/5 seconds. 
The tandem will not have been lightweighted. What would have weighed those four batteries? A weight that the frame should also bear in addition to the two cyclists. Also I see nothing that looks like a brake.

De Clerc & Pingault will soon develop and produce other vehicles.

e-Bicycles in The Netherland

One source suggests that Gazelle in The Netherlands in 1915 has designed an electric tandem too, with an 8- and 9-volt battery.


But only between 1935 and 1937 the first Dutch electric bicycle (no tandem) will be sold. It is an electric bike with 12-volt battery, developed by Philips and built by five Dutch bicycle manufacturers including Gazelle. In total 117 were built.
So no smashing success.

Today, this is quite different in the Netherlands. Even many of my peers have an electric bike. I don’t. For now I think that such an e-bicycle is too decadent. But I admit: they are increasingly common.

With four accumulators and an electric motor, plus pedal power from two riders, this machine should have been capable of a fair turn of speed. It was not a one-off. An example was shown at the Stanley Show in November 1897.


These machines were intended for pacing at cycle racing tracks, as indicated by the athletic costume of our intrepid riders. The small capacity of the accumulators made road use impractical.

1893 The pusher-Assisted Bicycle-Italy

The engine on the little trolley at the rear appears to be a single-cylinder unit with a big flywheel, pushing a conventional bicycle. The rider has his feet on what appear to be two platforms each side- possibly because the bicycle had no freewheel, so the pedals would have been whizzing round.

No control connections are visible between bicycle and engine, which is rather puzzling.

A motorized bicycle, motorbike, cyclemotor, or vélomoteur is a bicycle with an attached motor and transmission used either to power the vehicle unassisted, or to assist with pedaling. Since it always retains both pedals and a discrete connected drive for rider-powered propulsion, the motorized bicycle is in technical terms a true bicycle, albeit a power-assisted one. However, for purposes of governmental licensing and registration requirements, the type may be legally defined as a motor vehicle, motorcycle, moped, or a separate class of hybrid vehicle. Powered by a variety of engine types and designs, the motorized bicycle formed the prototype for what would later become the motorcycle.
