The Garmin Fenix ~ GPS WATCH

The Garmin Fenix ~ Garmin’s first outdoor GPS watch

Garmin signals its entrance into the outdoors GPS watch segment with the fēnix. Despite its annoying punctuation and emphasis baggage, the watch appears to be a fully featured and functional wrist top for the outdoors set. More than just a watch with a GPS chip, Garmin sees the fēnix as a hands-free navigation solution. Unlike its existing GPS sports watches, the Fenix (we’ve humored Garmin long enough) offers a more robust feature set that will navigate you into and out of the wild.

Like existing Garmin sports monitors, the Fenix tracks performance data like distance, time, pace and altitude. The unit can be paired wirelessly with Garmin’s heart rate monitor or bicycle cadence sensor for additional tracking features. The Fenix is also proficient in its ABCs (altimeter, barometer and compass), which can be automatically calibrated by way of GPS. Garmin’s Tempe external thermometer can be used with the watch for an accurate temperature reading. In terms of more basic features and design, the Fenix boasts a world clock with multi-clock display, alarm, vibration alerts, timer and stopwatch. It has a scratch-resistant LCD display with LED backlight and a rugged, waterproof (50 m/164 ft) housing. It offers up to 50 hours of battery life in GPS mode and up to six weeks in standard watch mode. The Fenix will hit the market this fall for US$400. That’s a full $100 less

SanDisk Extreme Ducati Edition 4GB and 8GB CompactFlash

From a marketing perspective, SanDisk’s objective is clear: they’re hoping to leverage their two-year sponsorship of the Ducati Corse MotoGP racing team (the press conference will include appearances by two team members, as well as Ducati stunt bike demonstrations). From a performance perspective, SanDisk’s goal is equally clear: with a speed rating of 42.9MB/second for the Extreme Ducati Edition CompactFlash, vs a 38.1MB/second speed rating for Extreme IV, the company set out to boost performance noticeably over their existing fastest memory cards. But the performance increase is meant to be evolutionary, rather than revolutionary.

SanDisk Extreme Ducati Edition

The SanDisk Extreme Ducati Edition 4GB and 8GB CompactFlash cards are, in essence, Extreme IV cards with improved controller firmware and slick SanDisk-Ducati branding. They support the same PIO (up to Mode 6) and UDMA (up to Mode 4) data timing modes as Extreme IV, use the same binary memory type and have the same -25°C (-13°F) to 85°C (185°F) temperature range specification. SanDisk’s engineering focus has been on wringing every bit of performance possible from PIO and UDMA transfers, for improved throughput in the many digital SLRs that support PIO, and the handful of card readers that support UDMA.

SanDisk Extreme Ducati Edition

And our testing shows that SanDisk’s effort has paid off: In the six Canon, Fujifilm and Nikon digital SLRs we’ve tested so far, both the 4GB and 8GB Extreme Ducati Edition cards are the quickest cards of their capacity in both JPEG and RAW write speed. The lead is small in most cases, owing to the fact that no shipping digital SLR cameras utilize the much-faster UDMA protocol that these cards support. Neverthless, SanDisk’s optimization of the PIO chatter between card and camera adds up to class-leading performance. The Extreme Ducati Edition 4GB, for example, is the only CompactFlash card here to exceed 11MB/second in the Canon EOS-1D Mark III in CR2 write speed testing.

SanDisk Extreme Ducati Edition

In card-to-computer transfers using the fastest UDMA-capable readers, we’ve measured up to about a 4MB/second bump in throughput, from 38.3MB/second to 42.3MB/second for the Extreme IV 4GB and Extreme Ducati Edition 4GB, respectively. This bring the performance of SanDisk’s Extreme Ducati Edition CompactFlash roughly in line with other makers’ top-performing UDMA CompactFlash, but it doesn’t bridge the gap completely. For example, the Extreme Ducati Edition 8GB card trails slightly the UDMA cards of the same capacity from Lexar, Hoodman and Transcend in our testing. The speed differences, however, have minimal real-world significance: all are capable of well over 40MB/second throughput, which is streets ahead of the 15-17MB/second that was tops a little over a year ago.

The Spare One phone ~ Lasts 15 Years on 1 AA Battery

Whether faced with a dead battery or an unexpected emergency, you’ve likely found yourself without access to a phone. It leaves you feeling helpless and even vulnerable. The makers of SpareOne phone seek to prevent similar situations in the future — or, at least, for the next 15 years.

The SpareOne phone ~ Lasts 15 Years on 1 AA Battery

Debuted at CES 2012, The SpareOne phone runs on a single AA battery, which can last up to 15 years or through 10 hours of talk time. The phone features straightforward, no-frills technology that allows you to make and receive calls from its simple, lightweight device.

SpareOne and XPAL Power (the portable power company behind SpareOne’s simple battery system) suggest using the phone for emergencies, such as natural disasters or roadside predicaments. But beyond that, SpareOne is great for planned activities that operate on tenuous communication means, such as backpacking or traveling overseas. You can even give one to the kids when they wander off at the mall.

How It Works

The SpareOne phone ~ Lasts 15 Years on 1 AA Battery

The phone’s designer, Alan Cymberknoh, uses his phone every day around 5 p.m., when his iPhone‘s battery goes dead. “I keep receiving and making calls on my SpareOne,” he says. “I have pre-set my important numbers on it — home, office, family — so when people call me, I pick up on my SpareOne.”

You’ll notice, however, that SpareOne doesn’t have a screen — that’s one of the reasons it can subsist on so little battery power. Users must instead memorize or program up to 10 numbers into the phone, and note them on the attached sticker. Some people actually welcome the return to more analog technology, says Jeniece Aragon, SpareOne’s marketing manager. Elderly people “appreciate the simplicity — [it] reminds them of how a phone ‘should be,’ and was,” she says.

On the other hand, SpareOne still requires a SIM card for most outgoing calls. You may choose to either use the SIM card from your main phone or request a copy SIM card from your carrier for a small monthly fee. If you’re traveling, you can buy a pre-paid SIM card — but keep in mind that it would have an entirely separate phone number. SpareOne even accounts for smartphones with Micro SIM cards, like the iPhone: Attached to the SpareOne phone is a pin that helps eject the Micro SIM door. Finally, if you find yourself in a situation with no SIM card whatsoever, you may still press the red button to reach emergency services.
